A
visible reminder of the ancient history of the district is the
"Lochmaben Stone" which can be seen on the Solway shore near the
farmland of Old Graitney.
The stone
marks the spot where Mabon, a tribal leader, fell in battle
around A.D. 600. The stone was called "Clock Maben", that is Maben's
stone, and eventually became Lochmaben Stone.
During the
many battles between the Scots and English the Lochmaben Stone
was a recognised assembly place for the troops. |
